Prostie menya. Ya ni po-Ruskie gavorit. =( Is there someone on this forum that can help translate for me?

I tried to e-mail contact address (turpan@ukr.net) but the mail was returned to me as undeliverable.

I am writing to know if the 5 speed gearbox upgrade is available for my 2004 Ural Wolf 750. If so, I am interested in purchasing.

Please write me at ural_wolf_rider@hotmail.com

Privet!

Thanks for writing.

There are several reasons that I purchased my bike. I know that Urals are not for everyone, but there is a subset of the motorcycle culture here that truly loves them. Some of my reasons are as follows:

I like unusual bikes. There are very few Urals in the States currently and many bikers here love seeing the Russian motorcycles. It really is a focus of attention no matter where I ride. The bikers with whom I associate appreciate bikes that are personalized, and unusual. They are not as impressed with mass produced bikes as they are with bikes like mine. Here in the US we have an acronym: R.U.B. This represents the term Rich Urban Biker. It is a derogatory term applied to the very few here that can attempt to impress other bikers by purchasing a new motorcycle from a shop and brag about how much money they spent on it. Most of us do not respect such behavior. The ability to take a bike (whether it be new or an old rat bike), fashion it into something that is an extension of yourself and ride proudly is more important than ’showing off’ something that was plucked off the showroom floor (and which will likely not get ridden much). I love my bike because not only is it unusual, but it allows me a lot of flexibility in being able to customize to suit my personality.

I enjoy vintage motorcycles. My Wolf looks and feels like the bikes I grew up with and love. For example, my Wolf responds like my ’69 Triumph TR6C.

For me, the Ural is easy to maintain, easy to repair and inexpensive by US standards. I once purchased a 99 Triumph Legend and found it so expensive to maintain that I lost interest in it. With my Ural, I understand the technology, only need a standard tool set and can do just about any mechanical work short of precise machine work by myself. It allows me a level of autonomy that most new motorcycles cannot provide (for example, many new japanese bikes require certified technicians and special tools to do basic maintenance - they are beautiful bikes, but they don’t meet my needs). As a biker, I am seeking to remove myself from the host society as much as possible. My Wolf allows me this more than any other bike currently in production.

Again, I realize the Ural isn’t a bike for everyone. But it is one that I enjoy very much. I’ll buy another one given the opportunity!

I must admit, that I do like HDs (especially vintage HDs - my favorite HD in the old Panhead). I like Harley Davidsons that were produced previous to the early 1970s. Do you have any idea how much a new Harley Davidson costs here? Most of us cannot afford to buy one. They have become in many respects, the exclusive domain of only a small percentage of the motorcycle riding public. The average income in this country does not allow one to purchase a $15,000 - $20,000 bike and still pay the rent or feed the family!!!

My wife is from Kamensk Uralsky. One day we will return to Russia to visit her family and I plan on visiting the Irbit factory as part of our travel plans.

Thanks again for writing. I apologize for not being able to communicate in Russian. I know very little Russian language, certainly not enough to discuss motorcycles, so I appreciate it very much that you can speak to me in English. :-)

Hi William! It’s good to see english speaker in our chat
About gearboxes...I don’t make any gearbox now can be till Autumn. Upgrading is posiible if possible using drive shaft of old models. Anyway you’ll lose an electrik start and use some additional fastening for an air filter. You can write me to other address: tural59@mail.ru

Thank you for the replies!

I have a small website where you can look at my bike. Soon I’ll have pictures of myself and family, too. There is only a small amount of information there, but I plan on building it into a much larger webpage. Visit http://www.russianthunder.org (note the .org, not .com! =)

Typ: I will take the discussion about converting the Wolf to a 5 speed gear box to your e-mail (unless others here are interested). If you have technical documentation that is in Russian, you can send it to me at ural_wolf_rider@hotmail.com. My wife is a native Russian speaker and can translate for me.

I have a couple of comments in response to the information that you provided:

1. I don’t mind losing the electric start. I like the kick start better!

2. I was not aware that there was a significant difference between the drive shaft on my bike and those on older models. Do you know if any modifications will be needed to fit this drive shaft on the new 750?

Thanks again,

William West

Hi

Just thought I’d say hello in the ’English’ thread
I’m an Irish Dnepr driver living in Sweden

We love your old iron bikes here too!!!!

I’m also looking for some information - my Dnepr-16 I am riding with no sidecar. But the swingarm bushings are made of rubber. Is there a way to make a replacement tapered bearing bushing for it - or could I use parts from a solo Dnepr?

Spasiba!

Dubliner
